3. There are many times when my friends and I disagree on our views. The time my friend and I argued about the Penn State scandal is something that sticks out in my mind. When the news came out that the NCAA was punishing the football team and university for the disgusting acts of Jerry Sandusky, many people began to argue. Since my friends from home knew I was attending Penn State this fall, they spoke to me about their opinion on the issue. When one friend told me that the NCAA was right about not letting the football team participate in postseason games, I fought back. I did not agree with this decision made by the NCAA. In order to change my friend's mind I used some fact and some opinion. I stated that the players on the team did not know about Jerry Sandusky's actions (fact), so they should not be penalized (opinion). Additionally, I stated that the people relating to this scandal were fired and new people had taken their position. This fact helped me back up my opinion that there was no reason to continue punishing the actual football team. Although I tried to use fact and opinion in my argument, my friend still would not change his mind. He felt that the NCAA had to do something about it and this was a reasonable punishment. I was not successful in changing the mind of my friend. On a much different scale, someone came to my front door in order to get me to donate to a cancer charity. Although, my first instinct was just to shut the door because I did not want anyone bothering me, I ended up donating to the charity. The person who came to my door used pathos in order to win his argument. He shared a heart wrenching story about his son who was diagnosed with cancer. The story brought tears to my eyes and ended with my charitable donation. The use of pathos as an argument was definitely successful.
