| | Usually we are taught "the five w's," five basic question words that help the reporter gather information. They include who, what, where, when, and why. Jennifer Sizemore added a new w to the list tonight- "wtf." She used this sixth w to describe the chaos involved in journalism and new technology. However, she also added that in this chaos, there is a lot of opportunity. In order to seize this opportunity, journalists must first walk away from everything they used to know. According to Sizemore, the demand for information is limitless. Today, people spend less on cars and homes, and more on education and technology. Now, roughly ten percent web page hits are done on a device other than a laptop or a desktop computer, and the amount of tablet sales has exploded. This increase in sales of new technology has created a larger market for content. Content can include many things, such as video, weather, local, and national news, and people are more interested in content now than ever, says Sizemore. She went on to say that although there may be more sources for content these days, it does not necessarily mean that there is more content. An occurrence where Kashmir Hill, a Forbes reporter summarized an article by Charles Duhigg from the New York Times exemplified the aforementioned statement. She concluded with a few pieces of wisdom. One of them came from a quote by Charles Duhigg, when he wrote in response to the summarization of his article. He said, "every hour spent summarizing is an hour spent not reporting." On that note, Sizemore urged her audience to not just be a content provider. It is important to "stoke the world's curiosity", as reportedly nbcnews.com strives to do. An informed world is a better world. Therefore, we, as journalists, have an obligation to our audience to not just bring them content, but to bring them information. |
